Mobile telecommunications has boomed in recent years resulting in growing public concern about potential adverse effects on the living matter of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation emitted by mobile phones.

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of mobile phone frequency radiation on cell proliferation, cytoskeleton structure and the mitotic index in a continuous V79 cell line.

V79 cells were exposed to 935 MHz frequency continuous-wave (CW) radiation at specific absorption rate (SAR) of 0.12 W/kg for 1, 2 and 3 hours. The cells were counted 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours after exposure for all exposure durations. Negative control cells were kept in the same conditions but were not exposed to radiation. Positive control cells were treated with colchicine. Colchicine inhibits microtubule polymerization and is an effective “mitotic poison”.

A significant decrease (compared to the negative control) in the proliferation of cells exposed for 3 hours was observed 72 hours after the exposure. Altered microtubule structure compared to the negative control was observed in the cells irradiated for 3 hours immediately after irradiation. The mitotic index of the exposed cells did not significantly differ from the negative control for any duration of exposure.

Significant decrease in the proliferation of cells exposed for 3 hours observed on the third post-irradiation day may be a consequence of damage to the microtubule structure observed immediately after irradiation.

The results of this study indicate that cell proliferation kinetics may depend on microtubule damage observed immediately after exposure to mobile phone frequency radiation.
