The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of RFR on the induction of Reactive oxygen species (ROS) release and/or changes in HSP70 expression in human blood cells. Lymphocytes and monocytes were exposed to 1800 MHz radiation for 30 or 45 minutes at SAR 2W/kg. The cells were exposed to CW or different GSM signals (GSM-DTX, GSM-Talk). Parallel exposures were made to PMA (a chemical that induces ROS release), sham, or incubator controls. To investigate the effects on HSP70 expression, the monocytes were exposed to GSM-DTX signal for 45 minutes. The
PMA treatment, as expected, induced a significant
increase in ROS production. The RFR exposure
did not induce ROS release or HSP70 expression.
One curious result was seen. Monocytes, but
not lymphocytes, showed a decrease in ROS level
during the experiment with GSM-DTX, when the
sham exposure was done. The GSM-DTX exposure
did not produce an increase in ROS production
when compared with incubator controls. The reason
for this finding is not clear. |
