Some recent studies claim that exposure to radiation from mobile phone or their base station may be harmful to the health of people and this effect may be mediated through reactive oxygen species (ROS). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are associated with numerous health problems, for example; inflammation, ageing, cancer, arteriosclerosis, hypertension, and diabetes. To alleviate tissue damage due to the formation of ROS, cells have antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and catalase (CAT) and nonenzymic antioxidants such as vitamins C and E.

The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of mobile phone use on some aspects of purine metabolism, free radical metabolizing enzyme activities and tissue oxidant status as well as possible protective effects of vitamin C.

Four groups of female Wistar albino type rats (were established with 10 animals in each group (Control, mobile phone, mobile phone plus vitamin C, and vitamin C alone). The mobile phone group and the mobile phone plus vitamin C group were exposed to mobile phone electromagnetic radiation (EMR). Then, the animals were sacrificed and brain tissues were dissected to be used in the analyses of malondialdehyde (MDA), antioxidant potential (AOP), superoxide dismutase, catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), xanthine oxidase, adenosine deaminase (ADA) and 50nucleotidase (50-NT).

Mobile phone use caused inhibition of the activity of some enzymes functioning in purine metabolism. 50nucleotidase activity was inhibited significantly in the mobile phone group compared to control group. Vitamin C, however, caused increases in the activities of the antioxidant enzymes.

The results of this study suggested that vitamin C may play a protective role on possible detrimental effects of mobile phone in brain tissue.
