Introduction
Testes may be exposed to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) if a mobile phone is kept in a trouser pocket. Data from experimental studies on potential effects of mobile phone emissions on testicular function are inconsistent: some studies suggest that damage to the testis may occur while others do not find any adverse effects.

Objective

The objective of this study was “to assess effects of whole body exposure to 1.95GHz for 5 weeks on rat testicles”.

Methods

Three groups of rats (12 animals in each) were used in these experiments. Group 1 received sham exposure, groups 2 and 3 were exposed to 1.95 GHz signal at low and high levels (whole-body SAR 0.08 W/kg and 0.4 W/kg, respectively) 5h/day 7 days a week for 5 weeks. The experiment was performed in duplicate. Animals were sacrificed at the end of the experiment. All organs were examined macroscopically and histopathologically, and sperm samples were collected for examination.

Results

There were no significant group differences in body weight gain, absolute and relative weights of the testes, epididymis, seminal vesicles and prostate. No significant differences among the groups were seen in sperm motility and morphological abnormalities. Sperm count in the testes was significantly greater in the high exposure group than in the sham-exposed group; no significant group differences in the sperm count in the epididymis were observed. No significant histological lesions were found in the testis, epididymis, prostate or seminal vesicles.

Interpretation and Conclusion

The authors have concluded that their results demonstrate no adverse effects of EMFs from mobile phones on the testes.
