Background
Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) enzyme is essential for cell growth. ODC overexpression leads to cellular neoplastic transformation. Experiments conducted by other researchers have shown a temporary increase in ODC activity in lysed L-929 fibroblast after 8 hours exposure to 835 MHz radiofrequency radiation (RFR) at SAR of 2.5 W/kg emitted by Digital Advanced Mobile Phone System (DAMPS). This increase has been interpreted as evidence that RFR acts as a non-genotoxic carcinogen.

Objective
The study was aimed at reproducing these findings of the previous research using the same cell line and various exposure conditions.

Methods
L-929 mouse fibroblasts were exposed to DAMPS or Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) signals at various SARs. Sham-exposed cells were used as control. Cell ODC activities were analyzed using 14CO2 generation from 14C-labelled L-ornithine.

Results
No significant alteration in ODC activity was observed in live L-929 cells after exposure for one hour to DAMPS-835 at 2.5 W/kg using both active fans to regulate temperature (37°C) and inactive fans. ODC activity was not altered after exposure at SAR of 6 W/kg with active fans. No significant difference in ODC activity was observed between sham-exposed lysed L-929 cells and exposed lysed L-929 cells to RFR for 8 hours at any tested SAR level (0.5, 1.0, and 2.5 W/kg). Exposure of L-929 cells to other RF signals, 217 Hz modulated GSM-800 (wire-patch antenna) or GSM-1800 (waveguides), did not result in significant modifications in OCD activity.

Interpretation and Conclusion
Exposure to various RF signals (DAMPS-835, GSM-900 or GSM-1800) has no effect on ODC activity regardless of the exposure conditions or cell conditions (lived or lysed L-929 cells) used in these experiments. Thus, the previously published findings have not been reproduced in this study.
