Background
A temporary increase in Ornithine Decarboxylase (ODC) enzyme activity was previously observed by a research group in L929 murine cells after exposure to Digital Advanced Mobile Phone System (DAMPS-835) signals. This result, however, was not reproduced in several other studies, including the study reported in a companion paper.

Objective
The objective was to extend the confirmation studies to SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells (in view of relevance of brain cells) using new well-characterized waveguide systems, DAMPS-835 and Global System for Mobile communications (GSM-1800), to expose the cells to radiofrequency radiation.

Methods
SH-SY5Y cells were exposed for 8 or 24 hours to 50 Hz-modulated DAMPS or 217 Hz-modulated GSM signals at Specific Absorption Rates (SARs) of 1 W/kg or 2.5 W/kg. Mean temperature variations never exceeded 0.03°C. Sham-exposed cells were used as control. Cell ODC activities were evaluated using 14CO2 generation from 14C-labelled L-ornithine.

Results
No significant alterations were observed in ODC enzyme activity in SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells after exposure to either 835 MHz DAMPS or 1800 MHz GSM signals under any exposure conditions (duration and SAR) used in this experiment.

Interpretation and conclusion
The results of this study are consistent with the results of the study of the partner Finnish research group who did not observe any alterations in ODC activity in various secondary cell lines after exposure to 217 Hz-modulated GSM signals in the same frequency range (872-900 MHz), or to the Sateilyturvakeskus (STUC) signal. Thus, the authors have concluded that with transformed cell lines there is no evidence that ODC activity is altered after low-level radiofrequency radiation exposure under various exposure set-ups and conditions.
