The increase exposure to radiofrequency fields (RF) emitted from mobile phones and base stations has continually produced public concern due to the potential health risks. This study reports on the dosimetric aspect of a project designed to investigate the effects of RF on the auditory system in vitro with inner hair cells exposed to GSM900, GSM1800, and UMTS1966. Three newly exposure set-ups were put together which were based on the fin-line concept.

A new concept of the fin-line was developed and used in this study. The authors demonstrated from numerical computations that a flat fin-line with a vertical asymmetry has a good potential for the objective of the experiment in this study. The field and SAR distributions measured in the exposure devices were analyzed with the finite integration technique (FIT). The complete electrophysiological set-up included components such as the bath chamber with solution, coverslip, patch clamp electrode, tubes for perfusion, fiber-optic sensor and microscope objective.

Results and Interpretation
In the paper, results of the technical aspects of the dosimetric study include field distribution, SAR distribution and power adjustment, comparison of field measurements and computations, temperature monitoring, and thermal effects. Good agreement was seen between results of field measurements and calculations. When other exposure devices used for in vitro studies were compared, similar results were found for SAR and input power of the fin-lines in this study. The narrow-band approach is a limitation of the fin-lines but the low power radiated is the reason the electromagnetic compatibility is considered good.
